How to Clean Up My Credit Report
September 14, 2009 – 8:31 pm | by adminThere are different strategies you can use to clean up your credit report, the key is to understand the route that is best for you. The first step to knowing the correct route is to find out what is on your report.
Once you have an idea of what is on your report you can begin the process of cleaning your report. If you find that you have a lot of errors on your report, the process of challenging them with the bureaus should work to help remove them. This method should be effective because your challenge is going to begin an investigation where the credit bureaus have to obtain proof that the account is yours.
Because the account is an error, they should find no proof and in turn delete the account from your report. On the other hand, if you have a few collection accounts you might want to see if you can settle them with the collection agency in exchange for a deletion.
It is important that you have it in writing that the collection will be deleted if a settlement agreement is reached. You can also try challenging collection accounts with the credit bureaus as well, some have had success deleting collection accounts due to the companies not maintaining good records.
I would also suggest applying for a secure credit card, this helps to begin re-establishing your credit rating. A portion of the formula for good credit takes into account the number of open accounts that you have. You will ultimately need a credit account that you use and is in good standing in order to regain a good credit rating.
